Porcupine Tree ist eine britische Progressive-Rock-Band, die im Jahr 1987 von Gitarrist, Sänger und Komponist Steven Wilson gegründet wurde. Steven Wilson, Veteran der englischen Musikszene, schuf die Band zuerst als rein fiktives Projekt. Er erfand die Geschichte einer Band aus den 70er Jahren mit einer frei erfundenen Diskografie. Zu Beginn war er noch alleiniger Urheber der Musik.
Ab 1993 wurde Steven durch Colin Edwin (Bass), Chris Maitland (Drums) und Richard Barbieri (Keyboards) unterstützt.
